Everyone must love being noticed. Or gaining recognition, like getting trophies or medals. I do not know about you, but I only like it when I earn it. I do not just want it to be given to me because I showed up, they mean nothing. People should not just get participation trophies for just showing up. Children should not just get a trophy for showing up or participating. In “In Youth Sports, Participation Trophies Send a Powerful Message” they state, “Self-esteem is a big part of one’s childhood. Watching a peer receive a trophy and not receiving one yourself can be degrading. Any kind of honor can make a young kid feel as if he or she meant something to the team, and that can boost the child’s self –confidence.” Basically, when a child gets a trophy and other children do not, that can hurt the child. They can begin to think “Oh I am not good enough to get a trophy” or “I do not need to keep playing this sport”, and just negative thoughts. So, when they do get a trophy, it gives them positive thoughts in their head. Children do not need to think negative thoughts at such a young age, so people need to give reasons for children to think positively. They take so much time out of their day to make sure they are somewhat good at a sport. “These kids dedicate time, effort and enthusiasm, and they deserve to have something tangible to make them feel that their participation was worthwhile.” They come home from school; they practice. They wake up early to practice. They base their whole lives on their sport. So, a trophy will just help them remember all the times that they could have gone to the mall with their friends, went swimming, shopping, slept in, was all worth it.
