In the short stories “How to Tell a True War Story” and “The Lives of the Dead” from The Things They Carried, author Tim O’Brien points out the impact of a story about the past and war and how it can affect someone, whether the story is true or untrue. Throughout these stories, O’Brien touches on the emotional toll stories can have on him and what he can create or do with a story. In his story “The Lives of the Dead” O’Brien writes about all of the people that he has lost that were important to him and how “[He] kept the dead alive with stories” (226). He talks about one girl specifically. Her name was Linda and and when he was little he fell in love with her and then she died.
