Whale Rider directed by Niki Caro is a movie about a young girl named Paikea. Her goal is to prove to her capable grandfather of becoming the next tribal leader. Pai’s grandfather believes that only capable boys are allowed to be the leaders, which blinds him in seeing his granddaughter’s passion as his successor. A character I admire most is Paikea because of her bravery and with all the hardship she faced through her journey, she never looked back and held in the little hope she had in her life.
Many people may have seen the American reality TV show, "Whale Wars," it was broadcasted from the year 2008 to 2015. The show was about a group of activists' harassment and fight against the Japanese whaling ship. How the show depicted the fight between a group and Japanese ship was controversial, the show was cut off without a conclusion about this battle, but it concluded in me that the issue has to be ended without such fight. As a native Japanese myself, the Whale catching has been a controversial topic for decades, in particular, environmental activities against whaling increased rapidly since the 1980s and broadcasted or made the articles, the topic certainly caught the attention from worldwide. Herman Melville’s book titled Moby Dick is an obsession with whales. Melville suggested in his book that the whale represented the man’s relationship with the world and his experience of whale hunting was a thing of capitalist. He also depicted whales as harmonious creatures and the ocean was sometimes depicted as pleasant. He explained his experience as a whale hunter as a good thing as it enable humans involved to appreciate the beauty of sea creatures but on the other hand it was not a good thing for the environment. These real life experiences and peoples’ histories with the Pacific helps us the importance of whales and the danger of whaling hunting in the Pacific environment as whales are important in the ecosystem.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to discuss how John Barth represents the masked modern society in his novel The Floating Opera .The novel is realistic by premise however; the reality of an experience is curiously unconvincing. The novel is a comedy of existential absurdity. The uncertainties, the fears, the debilitating angst, and the pervasive temper of near nihilistic despair that the protagonist Todd experiences are the dominant dispiriting tensions of the century.
