Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier is filled with love, secrets, and jealousy. This novel focuses on the life of the new Mrs. de Winter and the love the people of Manderley had for Rebecca, the first Mrs. de Winter. These two women are nothing alike, and Maxim choosing the second Mrs. de Winter has shocked his family and friends. “She’s so different to Rebecca.’’ (124). This tells how everyone felt when first meeting the second Mrs. de Winter. It’s almost like they were expecting her to be exactly like Rebecca. These women had different personalities, style of clothing, and interests. The way they lived their everyday life, and how they treated Maxim also played a big role in the differences between the two. The personalities of the two differed greatly. The first Mrs. de Winter had a mean and hateful attitude, while the second Mrs. de Winter was kind and compassionate. “I’m sure I should have been just as happy and comfortable in the west wing.” (75) The second Mrs. de Winter states as she is settling in at Manderley.
