How would you feel if you realized you have been a slave your whole life? In the Dystopian book Red Rising by Pierce Brown, society is based on colors. The highest being golds and the lowest being low reds. Darrow is a low red with a lot of anger and has been turned into a gold. Darrow has lost all of his loved ones and is now on his way to destroying society. During this time Brown believes when a person sacrifices themselves, they or someone around them will gain something in value. First of all, the author’s use of Darrow getting whipped helped develop the theme of sacrifice having a benefit for society. At the beginning of the book, Brown uses Eo’s sacrifice as a way to increase Darrow's hatred towards the golds. This not only helped Darrow in the long run but also helped Ares and Dancer. Darrow and Eo have just seen a simulation of the surface for the first time (in a restricted area). But they got caught, “As the thirteenth lash falls, I mumble for her not to do it, Eo stares into my eyes one last moment and then begins her song”(41)... For Eo, I do not react. I am angry. I am hatred”(44). Eo knew she would be hung, she was just trying to spark something in her society. She was trying to give them a willingness to fight back. Not only did she do this, she gave Darrow anger, and hatred, something that he used a lot in the rest of the book. She gave him the soul that he needed to help rebel against society. Every time he comes into a hard spot during the book he just thinks of Eo and continues to fight. With this in mind, Eo’s death was very important in developing Darrow as the angry Reaper we get to know later in the story. Her death allowed him to become the person Dancer and Ares needed to infiltrate the
