In the story Scat, the characters Nick Waters and Marta Gonzalez are doing everything in their might to try and find Mrs. Starch, their biology teacher who disappeared. However, when they meet up with Mrs. Starch for the first time in the Black Vine Swamp, they realize that she is caring for a panther cub. From then on, Nick, Marta, Mrs. Starch, and Twilly Spree try to protect the Black Vine Swamp. In Scat, there were three main ways in which these people got motivated to take action to save the environment. These include ending the illegal oil drilling done by Red Diamond Energy Corporation, saving a Florida Panther’s baby kitten from dying, and giving all other animals in the Black Vine Swamp a safe place to live. This reason had a significant impact to motivate the characters because they knew that if the Black Vine Swamp wasn’t a secure place, then the animals wouldn’t have anywhere else to live. They believed that no animal should ever not have a peaceful place to stay. Hunting was a huge way animals also died in the wilderness, so the protagonists in Scat made sure that no animal was shot or harmed in any way. In the text, it states, “Mrs. Starch was still down. Her face was pale and her eyes looked glassy, and a crimson stain was blooming on the side of her canvas trousers. . . Twilly hurriedly cut away the bloody pants to examine the bullet wound, which was serious. . . “We don’t have much time. You’re bleeding like crazy.”. . . “Where’s the kitten?” Mrs. Starch whispered again.” - (Scat, pg.337-338.) This explains how even though Mrs. Starch was hit by a bullet and was seriously injured, she was worried about the kitten’s safety the most. According to the text, it also states, “The causes of hunting are directly intertwined with human evolution. The devastating effects of overhunting have led to environmental consequences like animal extinction, poaching, and the destruction of forests and jungles.” - (Monika Martyn, Hunting Wild Animals to Extinction – A Heart-Breaking Reality! This also shows how hunting doesn’t just cause extinction, but also makes an area less protective. The protaganists made sure that people such as Drake McBride and Jimmy Lee Bayless should always be avoided in the wilderness. Even though some of the animals are dangerous, they taught us that anyone should have some type of shelter no matter what the cause
