Paul Starobin’s “Pork: A Time Honored Tradition Lives On” discusses the control exerted upon local appropriations by the Legislative Branch. The author points the divide the practice of “porking” creates within the House, fiscal conservatives are fundamentally against it, while some democrats support the action. Those in opposed to the method find that it creates budget inefficiencies because the federal funding is being used to finance local projects and special interests, which is generally done for political gain. However, those in favor, believe, as elected officials, their duty is to fight for the benefits of the people and areas they were chosen to represent. In reality, there needs to be a healthy balance between the two sides, central
As a Navy Reservist in a top cargo handling unit, I found myself on an airplane more often than I could have imagined. In those 5 years, we traveled to Virginia and Texas numerous times throughout the year for our weekend meetings not to mention yearly trips to places like California, Guam and Hawaii. It doesn't matter if I was away for the weekend or for two and a half weeks, packing made me apprehensive. I knew what I must bring... the uniform and what I wanted to bring... fun clothes.

I found Pollan 's book to be very informative and enjoyable to read. I particularly liked the fact that I could associate Pollan’s cultural, political and economic views to the topics we covered in class. In order to complete this assignment, I selected Part 1 of the book "Industrial Food" because I was particularly captivated by the secrets of corn and also because I believed that this section sincerely disclosed the reality behind High-Fructose Corn Syrup (a major participant in the development of obesity). Not only that but, the fact that corn is found in almost every product in our pantry, it’s a little frightening.
Ever since the beginning of time, meat has been a staple of the human diet. People have many reasons why they chose not to consume meat. There are countless amounts of influences in everyday life. Whether these influences are big or small, they still influence people. In the documentary, and articles it is clear of the effects of food influences on children as they are growing up. Food and culture strongly affect people as they are raised around it.
After coming to college, there is nothing I appreciate more than a nice juicy steak, and it is something I eat as much as possible. However, not everyone shares the same love for meat as me, many different authors, poets, and even philosophers have their own differing opinions. Plutarch, a Greek philosopher from around 100 C.E. had very negative opinions surrounding the idea of eating meat. Similarly, Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822), an English poet, shared a lot of very similar views and arguments as Plutarch. Furthermore, the piece “In Vitro Meat”, by Stellan Welin et al gives present-day opinions and arguments surrounding eating meat.

Alongside to the economic benefits that meat brings into our society, meat industries also help people from the lower class. Without meat industries, people from the lower class would eventually starve out as their easy and cheap access to food would be taken away from them. Simply eating small grains and vegetables would no longer provide the same amount of nutrients in their diet as previously mentioned in the paragraph above. It is for this reason that eating meat is ethical as taking it away would cause detrimental effects to our
