In out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, Billie Jo is my favorite character because of the optimism she maintains to have while she struggles to survive a harsh life. Having grown up in the bleak area of the Oklahoma Panhandle, during the great depression, Billie Jo and her family encounter many economical problems. Near the middle of the story, Billie Jo’s father is thinking about quitting farming because of the drought and the severe dust storm, which unfortunately tears apart all of his crops. Billie Jo assures her father, “‘The farm won’t fail,’ I tell him.
Ellie Wiesel, an author who wrote about his near death experience of being sent to a Concentration Camp in his book , Night, named his book after the darkness found in those who captured and tortured over six million people. The Jewish, Gypsies, and the Homosexuals were the main groups who were captured by German Dictator Adolf Hitler and his soldiers. In 1944, Wiesel and his family was captured in their neighborhood and was sent to Auschwitz. Wiesel, who was fifteen at the time, lied about his age in order to stay alive and be sent to work instead with the able-bodied. The able-bodied were those who were not too young, anyone under eighteen, or too old, those who were over forty-five.
The novel, Witness, by Karen Hesse is about humility, which reveals that people will think less of themselves for the better good of others. In the story, Sara Chickering brings Lenora Sutter into her house to get out of the cold. Lenora wore no jacket, boots or hat; all Lenora has on are her worn, old school clothes. Sara Chickering brings Lenora a cup of warm broth, a warm quilt and sits Leonora in her rocking chair. Then Sara Chickering goes to Iris Weaver's restaurant and calls upon constable Johnson and Doc Flitt.
Carol Karlsen 's The Devil in the Shape of a Woman: Witchcraft in Colonial New England provides a sociological and anthropological examination of the witchcraft trends in early New England. By examining the records, Karlsen has created what she suggests was the clichéd 'witch ' based on income, age, marital status, etc. She argues that women who had inherited or stood to inherit fairly large amounts of property or land were at particular risk, as they "stood in the way of the orderly transmission of property from one generation of males to the next." These women, Karlsen suggests, were targeted largely because they refused to accept "their place" in colonial society.
In Karen Russell's short story, “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves”, a pack of wolf-girls are sent to a church to transform them into human-girls. As they journey through their transformation there is a guide called, The Jesuit Handbook on Lycanthropic Culture Shock that helps the nuns running St. Lucy’s. The book describes the transformation in stages to help determine the girls’ place as a human. Claudette, the narrator, arrives at St. Lucy’s with her pack to begin their transformation. She struggles through most of the stages, but succeeds in only a couple of them.
I will be analyzing the character Schmidt in a short clip of flashbacks from the show New Girl; Schmidt is actually one of my favorite characters , but I am now realizing some things about him that I haven 't thought of before. For instance, in "Bachelorette Party," they showed a flashback of "fat" Schmidt in college with his ex-girlfriend before he became a body-obsessed guy and changed completely. Schmidt has also confessed in another episode of being judgmental of others appearances because of his experience as an overweight child that has left him emotionally traumatized. Many of the flashback videos put emphasis on his stomach, showing him having trouble with the topic of girls and eating large amounts of food. The shows flashbacks
Girl, Interrupted, written by Susanna Kaysen in 1967, is a thought provoking memoir following her and fellow parents’ tragic and twisted experiences in McLean Mental Hospital. As a young adult Susanna Kaysen tried to commit suicide by swallowing a bottle of pills and following it with a bottle of alcohol. Her parents were very worried about her and suggested her to go to a doctor that her dad once knew. Kaysen visited the doctor who, after talking to her for a while, requested that she be sent to one of the best mental hospitals in her area. She had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

It started with four freshmen students who simply sit-in at the store, they ordered at the counter and waited to be served, but they are ignored until the establishment closed. Later, more students in Nashville, Tennessee joined the protest, they also sit-in and endured the harassment and negligence, some of them are arrested, but other students will simply take their place to sit-in in more stores and businesses, but during 1960 their hard work paid off when some of the establishment simply respond to serve them to avoid sales loss and incidence of harassment.
In My Antonia, Willa Cather pens a nostalgic story focused on a two people with a unique connection. Jim Burden narrates the story of Antonia Shimerda, the girl next door who happens to be a Bohemian emigrant. Jim moves to his grandparents’ house after his parents die; Antonia arrives in the United States with her family and little else. The two are vastly different, but bond quickly on the Nebraska prairie. Most people who study the novel acknowledge the obvious impact that Antonia has on Jim and see Antonia as “in one way or another, the center of the novel” (Lucenti).
In the Book All Summer in a Day, Margot will come out of the closet laughing crazy because she has gone insane. This is because she shows lots of warning signs of mental illness. According to Warning SIgns of Mental Illness, some signs of craziness are “Feeling Disconnected - A vague feeling of being disconnected from oneself or one’s surroundings; a sense of unreality” (WebMD, 6). Margot often shows signs of insanity. She keeps herself isolated from others and is often a loner.
The Rez Sisters by Tomson Highway tells a story of a group of seven Native women that live on Wasaychigan Reserve. The play highlights the struggles and hardships faced by those who live in these settlements. The sisters also further shed light on the internal conflict and individual struggles that each of the characters face. THE WORLD’S BIGGEST BINGO seems to hold the solution to all The Rez Sisters problems and seems to be an escape from their personal demons. Each individual regards the winning of the bingo as an inexplicable end to all of her individual problems.
