The story first takes place in Calgary, Canada, picking up from the previous book, “The First Stone,” with Reef finding out that his mentor; a youth worker named Frank Colville, has been killed by a “young offender” (Aker 18) in Halifax. He then “[spends] the whole flight from Calgary [… trying] to sum up [Frank’s life]” (Aker 14) in a eulogy. Leeza is introduced with her “lying in her bedroom in Halifax, Nova Scotia [… in] her parents’ Connaught Avenue home” (Aker 12). While the location of the story does not serve much purpose to the overall plot, it does, however, create a certain sense of realism to the story, which allows the reader to easily picture how the setting may have looked like.
