Could you imagine living in a world with no history, or memories of the past? Think of not being able to share extravagant stories of your families history or the stages your country went through to become what it is now. Well, this is what it was like Jonas in the book, The Giver. The Giver gives Jonas all of the memories of the past, allowing him to look at life in a new way. Jonas changes as a person and finds the truth about his community. The community, is all the same, not having access to the memories of the past, blinded by what they think is a perfect world. The reason Jonas is getting all of the memories is because the community can’t handle them. The last time the community even had access to a few, “it was chaos” (104). Next, Jonas’s community wants to live in a harmless environment, no violence what so ever. They don’t even want the pain from the past to overwhelm them. “They really suffered for a while. Finally, it subsided as the memories were assimilated, But it certainly made them aware of how they need a Receiver to contain all that pain” (104) the Giver tells Jonas. Also, the Giver explains to Jonas how there is more to history than just Jonas’s life or his parents. “ ‘Before you, before me, before the previous receiver, and generations before him’” (77).
