In the story “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter” the doctor saves Mabel from ending her life from drowning because of love. Mabel lost her father, than her brothers abandon her, and she loses her home and money. She attempts suicide to end her emotional distress. All awhile this is going on, there seems to be a close eye on her. Had it not been for Jack Ferguson, a local doctor, saving Mabel from a fatal decision that she could not undo.

On several occasions Maybel and the doctor caught direct eye contact with each other. Whether or not that’s enough to prove love, the moment was always intimate. Ferguson dived into the pond to save her. He took her to his home. He undresses her and covered her. He tended to Maybel until she regain consciousness, he assures her that she is not losing her mind and temporarily relieves her of her distraught. Glad he was, that she was alright. But it still bothered him that she made a ridiculous decision. It obviously disturbed him. Maybel senses that the doctor wants her and assumes he loves her. He resists a bit, but it wasn’t long before he admits that he does, indeed, want her.

Saving Mabel wasn’t enough. Dr. Ferguson comforted Mabel in every way. He assured her of her worth, medicated her, and eventually said he loved her. The moment she became conscious again the energy was there. Something had always been bound to bluster between the two. The doctor proved this very effectively with the finishing kiss.

It’s no surprise how the doctor and Mabel locked eyes at the exact right moment and on time. Each instance there is they give the sharpest stare at each other, no words needed to understand. Math definitely did itself and summed it up. Love at first sight was a definite case in this picture. Here there was a woman who lost everything and regain everything back quicker than she thought.
