The National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics clearly provides social work professionals with ethical guidelines to be successful in the profession. It is important for social workers to understand discrimination rules and laws so that they can be aware of them in the workforce. Discrimination in the social work profession can also result in an issue with diversity. A relatable ethical dilemma I have experienced with discrimination was when I tried out for softball. The softball coach was white and the majority of the team was black. My team had reversible jerseys which were black and white, and the coach told us to flip to the black side of our jerseys, then he said jokingly, “wait… you guys are already black.” We all looked at each other for a moment and went along and laughed at the joke, but I sort of took it …show more content…

The Code of Ethics states that, “Social workers behave in a trustworthy manner” (Code of Ethics, p.6). Social workers should never be dishonest while working in their profession. Dishonesty can be used when a social worker is counseling, consulting, or interacting with a client, colleague, or supervisor. It is important to be honest because telling the truth, showing respect and acting responsible makes our clients and colleagues more comfortable with working with us. An ethical dilemma I have experienced with honesty is when I was a victim of domestic violence. My partner at the time wanted me to tell the authorities that the incident never happened so that he wouldn’t be convicted of the crime. I highly considered it at the time because I was still in love with him and we had a child together. I did not want to ruin their relationship because of what happened. When the authorities commanded me to come in and give my side of the story I was very nervous and unsure if I should lie under oath or do the right thing and tell the truth. I ended up telling them exactly what happened and felt like I did what is right. This example shows the importance of honesty. I feel that the social worker’s responsibilities as professionals will be applicable to my future practice because it gives us social workers strong moral principles on how our colleagues and clients should be treated, which will
