As I strolled through the museum I found that landscape art attracted me the most. I say this because when I saw the Niagara and the Rapids by John Vanderlyn I felt so immersed in the world. The painting is so detailed I felt like I was in the painting. The waves in the water were so real and the forest felt active. You can tell that every stroke of the brush was done with precision and purpose.
Looking at the painting from right to left helps see the flow of nature. This shows that the world never stops, even though it is a still image. That is what I think this painting means, that nothing stops moving even when you try to freeze it. Doing further research on this I found out that this is about The Nation of the United States, to show how powerful it is and prosperous. I see this as the U.S.A. rolling over to other countries raining down its ideas and values wherever it goes. As the water flows out of the Lake Eyre it swells and becomes these grand rapids slicing through the land like it was butter. The constant rush of water shows that no man can beat it, in time nature will always win.
The left portrait is one of simple design but, great detail. The first thing I noticed was the rainbow in the center of the river just at the base of the falls. Even though it is dim and the clouds are about to cover it, the rainbow is still there sprouting its natural colors to the forest in the background. I feel like it is trying to tell me something, I have to ask myself every time “why does the rainbow not have vibrant colors.” I do not know why it feels mysterious or why the colors change the mod of the painting so
