In the poem "Family Tree" by Tupac Shukar, explains about how it doesn't matter where you come from because that doesn't determine your future. This music has been criticized for many things such as its explicit language and its emphasis on drugs and violence. However, there is a side of rap with positive aspects including a focus on social change. Known for his poetic and thought-provoking lyrics, American rapper and songwriter Kendrick Lamar is an example of this side of hip-hop.

Kendrick has opened up in his struggle with gang violence and drugs in both numerous songs and interviews. The “borderlands” is the division of a place, but in the eyes of Gloria she makes the character grow up in a place where there is a racial division.
