What makes a story enjoyable? Is it the plot? Or is it the methods the author uses to connect to the reader? Plot is a big thing, but it is the literary devices that bring the story together. In the three stories, “The Tunnel” by Sarah Ellis, “The Skating Party” by Merna Summers and “The Bicycle” by Jillian Horton all have unique literary devices to make each story more intriguing and to give them the feeling of being part of the story.
I realized that I was not a risk-taker; going out of my comfort-zone was a huge faux pas. On page 189 of The Skating Party, when Uncle Nathan reflects back on his decision to disassemble the stone man, he says “I think

Do you ever really know when you will come face to face with a struggle? No, of course not. If you knew you would avoid facing them all together. In fact, given the choice between facing their own hardship or seeing someone else face their’s, no matter how noble an individual you claim to be, you would choose the latter. The Skating Party is a story that depicted a man’s struggles throughout life, seen through his fifteen year old niece, Maida. When faced with a dilema the character Nathan Singleton has to choose between his fiance or the woman he loves, in a battle against time where he can only save one sister.
Discourse conventions are guided by the type of genres within the discourse community. In the article by Chandler, they write, “genres tend to be based on the notion that they constitute particular conventions of content (such as themes or settings) and/or form (including structure and style) which are shared by the texts which are regarded as belonging to them” (Chandler). We can also apply this, not only to texts but also through the ways of spoken and digital communication that people within their discourse community use. My chosen discourse community is the U.S. Figure Skating Organization. Within this discourse community there are many different types of conventions used by members of the community and the organizers as well.
Moving from one place to another at such a young age is bound to leave some trauma, then I would like to account the abuse that took place in the family, with beatings from a overly strict father, sexual abuse from a mother; someone that is supposed to protect and nurture, then the mental abuse that left young Nathan sad and confused. It was only a matter of time before he snapped and the person he did snap on happen to be the main cause of his problems. I’m not saying what he did was not bad, because it was; I am simply stating that events led up to his mother death, he didn’t just decide to come home and just start
Damsel of Death Females have been killing just as long as men, but their different methods of killing, such as poisoning and smothering victims, allowed them to slip under the radar (Booth 15). Only two women have been executed in the state of Florida. One of those being the world's first women serial killers, Aileen Wuornos. Aileen will forever be remembered by the public for causing such tragedies. Her experiences during her troubled childhood, coupled with multiple mental health issues, not only makes you feel sorry for her victims but for herself as well.
Gertrudis’ departure sends the ranch on an uproar. In her leaving the ranch it symbolizes freedom. Freedom, because she does not have to obey to her mother anymore. Samantha Garcia Nile Hartline ENG 105 USE 12187 26 September 2015 Three Dancing Figures, Version C “I think public art (unless there is a specific political or ideological message) should make people feel comfortable, and brighten their environment.” As I walked through the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, there were a few sculptures that I found appealing but the one sculpture that caught my eye in particular was the Untitled Three Dancing Figures. The sculpture itself has an interesting design in which all of the Dancing Figures are touching each other and it seems as if the figures are marching and dancing in order. The sculpture was designed by Keith Haring in 1989, but was not assembled until 2009 when John and Mary Pappajohn commissioned
