This song shows and compares the way people are being judged and discriminated by the way their hair looks. It embraces the saying of “Don't judge a book by it's cover” by showing how different hairstyles could affect the way people see you.
The lyrics of Akon saying “And then I couldn't get no job, no corporate wouldn't hire no dreadlocks”. Set the mood for me, feeling down and saddened by the way other people get judged and put down from a simple hair style. This reminds me of this young south african girl i met, she applied for a job at a local food corp but had been declined due to her dreadlocks. The same story applies with the lyrics akon has written.
Further in the song the main hook introduces what the poem says as a statement “I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am not your ex-pec-tations no, I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am a soul that lives within” This creates a touching mood for myself as i know a lot of people in the world feel this way within, but some are too scared to open up to someone. This makes me realise that other people around me can feel this way and it wouldn't feel nice being misunderstood by the way you have styled, or cut your hair.
