The book that was chose to complete the African American Children’s Book Review is
Happy to Be Nappy. The book is written by Bell Hooks. Hooks was originally born as Gloria Jean Watkins but later took on her pen name which was the same as her grandmother. Other than an author hooks is known to be a feminist and critic. Hooks refuses to use capital letters in her name because she thinks that it creates an ego with names. The author of Happy to Be Nappy has written several other children books which include: Skin Again, Be Boy Buzz, Homemade Love, and Feminism is for Everybody. Some of the other works written by bell hooks are in reflect many feminine issues and are used to uplift women and help them the understand the importance of appreciating being a black woman. Happy to Be Nappy is a book that was created to help young black girls appreciate the different textures that can come with having black hair. The book gives different examples of how to embrace black hair all while still being happy and nappy. …show more content…

For many years the natural state of a black woman’s hair was not really praised and bell hooks is trying to get a message to young girls not to allow things as small as hair impact your happiness. The illustrations in the book show comparisons of black girls with short hair and long hair and how no matter what young girls should focus on happiness. In Happy to Be Nappy hooks is also trying to interpret the importance of how black women and their hair is an important part of many black women’s morning
