The song “Run” by BTS explores the dangers of one-sided adoration. The singer expresses the pain that he experiences due to his very deep devotion and yearning for his lover, who does not return the same emotion. The song discusses the various changes in the singer’s feelings about what to do with his unrequited love. His indecisiveness causes his consciousness to go between blaming himself and blaming the distinct person for his inner agony. The singer “running” is a metaphor for self-destruction. For the singer, the action of running is the only action he is capable of, but running represents all the deeds that are done to keep his companion. The only difference is that they deliver it differently, going back and forth between singing and rapping. This aspect can cause the differing in mood and tone in the song; rapping can make the lyrics seem more angry and rough while singing can make the song sound wistful and somber. Shifts in mood and tone can be seen all throughout the song due to the different vocalists and rappers working together, but there is a prominent change in the tone when the rappers change for the first time. After Kim Namjoon delivers his rap in the first verse, rapper Min Yoongi starts to rap his part which is noticeably angrier and rougher while Namjoon’s is more serene and calm. This change in tone, as well as the lyrics, cause the listener to feel a strong surge of emotion from Yoongi’s rap and can assume that the one rapping is currently angry at himself and blaming himself for the situation he is in.
