In Mattie’s world the meaning of true grit is to have a lot of courage. I feel everybody except Tom Chaney has some form of true grit. For example Rooster Cogburn showed true grit because he charged against seven armed riders with two pistols on a horse by himself. However Mama has true grit because she is battling death back at home. The reason Tom Chaney has no true grit is because he is a coward.
“Who Has Grit??” The Definition of grit is to have Courage, determination and passion a goal. In the novel True Grit the character that have this trait are Mattie Ross because she is avenging her father’s death. Also Rooster Cogburn has grit because his a man with no fear and keeps his word with helping Mattie Ross.

We also have two differing tests one that touches on just IQ and the other that touches on practical intelligence.
Hanford’s article also provides the example of the spelling bee, “In a study we found of finalist in the spelling bee, we found that grittier children completed more hours of deliberate practice [Pg. 52]”. Connecting Duckworth and Hanford’s article they both use the spelling bee to provide an example to understand the true definition of grit. In the article “Mindset,” by Carol Dweck, Dweck provides a definition and example of two mindsets. She focuses on having a growth mindset, since most people that obtain a growth mindset are most likely to be more successful in life.
Grit and Growth Mindsets both work together to support success. Grit and Growth Mindsets are both positive things and if you don’t have either of those two things you will not be successful. According to Angela Lee Duckworth and Lauren Eskreis-Winkler, “Grit, however, is distinguished from the general tendency to be reliable, self-controlled, orderly, and industrious, with its emphasis on long-term stamina rather than short-term intensity.” (p.51.) Duckworth and Eskreis-Winkler are saying that Grit is, having the ability to always be able to do something and to do it right way and to work very hard on it and to sustain it rather than not giving your all to it.
Many people think that just because someone is academically smart they’ll automatically achieve success. Just because someone has a high IQ doesn't mean they're guaranteed success. Authors such as Malcolm Gladwell in the Outliers gives many examples of why academic intelligence may not be enough. Social class, IQ, practical intelligence, and luck are key factors of achieving success.
Intelligence is a necessary part of success because it allows you to uncover new pathways as well as giving you better problem solving skills. And while this may be the case, having a high IQ is not all that’s needed to succeed in
The Greatness in Grit There are many important human traits but I am only going to be talking about one that one trait is grit. Grit is a strong trait that some people have and other people don’t it is not something that can be taught it is something that must always be there and most people have some amount of grit big or small it always makes a difference in their character and their integrity. In the novel True Grit by Charles Portis, the characters Rooster Cogburn, Frank and Mattie Ross are portrayed as having the presence or the lack of grit. This book mainly describes Mattie Ross’ story in her own words. Frank Ross, Mattie’s father is killed in cold blood at the beginning of the book by a man named Tom Chaney, who then stole from the man’s dead body and ran away like a coward.

Some people believe that students who go to college more intelligence than students who go working after graduating high school. In fact, it was a much better predictor than the Whole Candidate Score, which West Point at that time thought was their best predictor of success.” Her point is that test scores do not determine how sage, fortitudinous, or adroit someone is. On the other hand grit does predict success over and beyond talent.
