n 2018, a copyright lawsuit was filed against Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, and his team for allegedly copying the hit song "This Is America" from a track titled "Made in America" by rapper Kidd Wes. The case raised questions about the extent of protection for original works of art, the importance of attribution, and the value of fair use. This is America." Many African Americans are depicted in stereotypical situations such as murder and theft in the video. He made this video to show the audience how he believes the people of America perceive his ethnicity. Due to racial injustice in America remaining unresolved challenges Learned Hand's claim that America is a land of freedom from
The film Boyz N the Hood is a story about life in South Central Los Angeles. The film was wrote and directed by John Singleton in 1991. I chose this movie because of its relevance to the course and how it reflects pop culture in that time period. The opening line in the movie “one out of every twenty-one Black American males will be murdered in their lifetime” really catches the audience attention (Nicolaides & Singleton, 1991). This movie goes into detail and shows the life of three young males living in the hood of Los Angeles battling a life surrounded by drugs, violence, and questions of race.
But all your focus is on Gambino and the group he's dancing with. Is this the truth of what America is? Is America only decribed as a violent, scary and chaotic place? Are all police as shown in the video the same in real life? Does bad out weight the good?
There is a clear emphasis among how America is viewed and understood today, though not all views are the same. "This is America", by Childish Gambino has separate views involving how America is viewed today, opposed to Learned Hand's speech in 1944, "I am an American Day Address". Learned Hand believes that Americans represent liberty, while Childish Gambino believes in violence, and fighting, and I agree with Learned Hand because liberty brings freedom. Hand opts for his explanation of liberty in I am an American Day, stating that Americans are living by liberty.
“I don’t want to give it any context. I feel like that’s not my place. I feel like if I do that it doesn't feel good to me, it doesn’t feel good to anybody. I feel like whatever I make is for the people, and after watching it you can walk away with whatever you need to walk away with.” Donald Glover, (Childish Gambino), says this in an interview with Chris Van Vliet when asked if he could explain what his latest release, “This is America” is all about.
“Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 103). This is not only the most well-known quote from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, it is also one of the most meaningful phrases that come from this book, along with “… Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 103). Every part of these two quotes connects to a lesson taught during the story of To Kill a Mockingbird.
GLAAD will honor Jay-Z’s 4:44 track "Smile" at the organization’s upcoming Award Show. The song reveals and celebrates the sexuality of Jay-Z’s mother Gloria Carter who recently revealed that she had been living as a lesbian to the rapper. “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian. Had to hide in the closet
A bunch of different stories told in one book come together to for a story book which is classified with many labels and purposes. For instance, a story book obviously needs to tell a story; one that the reader can connect to or just even find a relevant thought that will keep the reader thinking about what they just read. Some story books break the third wall and speak to the readers directly like some scary stories do. Something about a story book is that in one way or another the author’s past experience and knowledge are just presented in the story being read at the time. Using this classification, the album 17 by Xxx Tentacion can easily fall into the classification of a story book.
The Art of Meek Mill Meek Mill a fascinating hip hop artist who makes influential and life relating music because he raps about how it is growing up having very little and how tough it was. I have chosen “ Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and “ Rock Around The Clock” by Bill Haley as this assessment ‘s topic. Basic information of two songs will be mentioned first, then similarities, differences and connections will be discussed afterwards. Hip-hop is an influential form of music that displays an artist’s honest and revealing story that many of the general public can relate to. One of the many songs that I can relate to is “Love Yourz” written by J Cole. The song talks about how Cole reflects on the most important things in life such as love and happiness. He realizes that the money and fame didn’t bring him the happiness he desired. To gain true happiness, he needed to appreciate himself and those that love him.
There have been many protest songs in the United States; the freedom of speech has contributed to powerful music and protest words that are written in song. The song that will be discussed throughout this essay is “American Idiot” by Green day. This song speaks volume about the uneducated “America” and puts emphasis on the destruction that reality television is making on the United States of America. Listening to the unspoken word and read between the lies, for that then you will understand. The song “American Idiot” was released during the 2004 presidential election, where George W. Bush was selected into office for the second term as President of the United States of America (source).
The song that I chose was “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. It was released in 2004, and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. It also hit number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Natasha Bedingfield has another popular song “Pocketful of Sunshine” and was really only popular in 2004-2006.
