Over the past year, American politics have been the forefront of many people’s minds. However, before the recent election, political parties concentrated their efforts on the primaries, where they chose a candidate to represent their values. Regarding the Democratic party, the two main contenders were Hillary Clinton— who later went on to be the Democratic nominee— and Bernie Sanders— an elderly Socialist Jew who appealed to the younger generation. As a part of his platform, Sanders expressed his desire to make college free, causing the topic to become a main headline in the media. Although Sanders failed to become the Democratic nominee, his idea persisted throughout the election, as Hillary Clinton included the ideology in her campaign.
Within the reading of chapter four of Our Kids by Robert Putnam one key point of his argument is that it really matters where kids attend school and who they are attending school with. The overall growing class gap is extremely evident within the American school system. However, schools are not responsible for the creation of the opportunity gap because the gap already exists before schools are put into the picture. While this may be true, the schools that kids from affluent families are attending are significantly different than schools that children from poorer families are attending. This could be a product of the fact that affluent and poor families are usually not living in the same areas.

Likewise, a white child from a low class family might only have the option of attending a school in East St. Louis. In addition, they seem to only be passionate about issues that have potential to benefit them personally.
For example, in a normal school system during the time period of segregation white schools the children were given the curriculum was full of helpful educational tools like new books and passionate educated teachers. The advancement of white school’s curriculum allowed them to be more successful after high school and pursue a profession in medical or law related fields. This highly contrasted with the curriculum at black schools because most of the time the teachers had little training, and children in black schools were only taught skills that prepared them for working as sharecroppers or factory workers (Irons par. 11-15). In the state government’s eyes blacks were worth more than they were working as farming hands than in the classroom.

The unfairness of socioeconomic status can be seen in our daily lives yet it is something that we push to the back of our minds. By showing these social inequalities through the use of language, Toni Cade Bambara 's short story "The Lesson" raises awareness for the African-American pursuit of cultural identity and emancipation. The reader gains an insight into the world of a black working class girl, named Sylvia, who narrates the story in African American vernacular English (AAVE).
Most areas with low income or poor housing tend to not live in areas with good schools systems. Poor communities tend to not have the money to fund schools for better education sources like teachers, equipment or school trips.
