There was a deflation in asset and product prices and disruption of trade, which ultimately resulted in widespread unemployment around the globe and eventually led to poverty known as the century of Great Depression. Because of the amount of influence the American economy had in the world, the US stock market was equally important to the world economy. Jurgis finds work at Brown's slaughterhouse and there he endures harsh working conditions as well as his family members. Ultimately he and family suffer many tragedies related to their work environments. While this book is a work of fiction it mirrors real life. The Jungle was published in 1906 during the Gilded Age.
Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle was a novel popularized and published during the Progressive Era with the purpose of exposing the horrific working conditions of the Chicago meat industry. Sinclair exposed the unsanitary practices of the meat industry and the dehumanization of the workers. The harsh realities written in Sinclair’s novel reached the hearts of many Americans furthering the push of many progressive activist’s demands. In the end this created an everlasting lawful change with the help of President Theodore Roosevelt.
Upton Sinclair displays his dexterous writing ability in one of his most widely familiar books “The Jungle”. Throughout this unique masterpiece Sinclair broadcast multiple conditions which one today would not know to judge from its content as a horror or jest. He goes about this by storytelling the life of an immigrant family. These conditions vary from poor living setups to the stomach turning health violations undertook by the meat industry. Overall imposing his theory that the heavily sold illusion of the american dream wasn’t at all what it was made out to be.
When Upton Sinclair, a progressive era muckraker, wrote The Jungle in 1906, he was attempting to bring knowledge of the horrific conditions in Packingtown to the average citizen. His revelations on the terrors of Packingtown helped to slowly improve the lives of the immigrants. Sinclair’s pursuit of knowledge relates to the slowly growing knowledge of the characters in The Jungle. Throughout the story the characters find themselves in many tragic circumstances that could have been more easily avoided if they had been more aware of their surroundings. The immigrants are full of a false hope for success that disillusions the reality of their life.

The working conditions in the factories were unsafe, unsanitary and people made little. The purpose of this book was for people to become socialist other than capitalist.
Theme Symbolism for Elephants Usually in a novel, a theme is something that helps the reader infer what the main ideas are by finding common threads throughout the story. In the novel, Water for Elephants, the theme of love is hard to miss, despite all the circus cruelties and tragedies. Young Jacob falls instantly in love with Marlena, the trick horse rider. Later Marlena works with Rosie, the elephant, with whom both Jacob and Marlena fall in love. It is their love of animals that pulls the two love-birds together.

In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, the era of the Great Depression in the 1930’s is revealed through a simple story of ranch workers who hope to improve their lives. Migrant workers, George and Lennie, have a friendship that is based on trust and protection. The other workers lack the companionship and bond that these two men have. In the novel, the absence and presence of friendship is the motivation for the characters’ actions.
This is challenge is caused due to the Great Depression and the stock market Crash of 1929. Although the book is dark and grim the characters are searching for an opportunity to fulfill their dream of their own ranch. This book was written just after the World War 1 where everyone faced poverty and cruelty due to it. It is a parable about what it means to be a human.

Freedom is always wanted, but when it is not available, constraints will be broken. One’s personality in the novel analyzed will decide whether they break the rules or follow them. In Water for Elephants, the main characters are either confined or free, and they deal with and create this underlying theme depending on their personality and character.
