Cierra Greenidge Put to a choice! Jim Heynen story describes the beautiful and selflessness of humans making the right choice. The passage “What Happened during the Ice Storm” by Jim Heynen, has a very important idea and message it sends. The story has a very good theme to it and tells an important story. Throughout the story we see how the boys helped the pheasants out in the snow storm instead of leaving them out in freezing snow storm. After reading this story the reader can identify the theme of this passage, what’s in the human nature, and also how people are challenged through difficult situations. One way it show how the boys first thoughts were to dismiss birds and scare them away. It states in the short story “To pounce on a pheasant, or to yell Bang!” (Heynen 1). The first human instinct was to scare the birds away. As the reader sees in this difficult choice the boys are in an ice storm with the pheasants around them. But as it gets more in depth of the story it shows how the boys were actually selfless in this difficult position. The narrative explains “But the inside of the coat was dry and warm. He covered two of the crouching pheasants with his coat, rounding the back of it over them like a shell. The other boys did the same” (Heynen 1). This quote shows how put in a position to make a choice the boys choose to do the thing they thought was most right. In addition the narrative also uses diction to get the theme of this poem across to the reader. He uses a lot of grammar and details to explain things. In the story it explains “Then one of the boys said, Shh. He was taking of his coat, the thin layer of ice splintering in the flakes as he pulled his arms from the sleeves” (Heynen 1). The details in this coat help describe the selfless act that the boys made for the pheasants. It also helps the narrative point on how humans sometimes act in difficult
