So why am I always looking back? `` (Abela 13) The play Jump for Jordan, written by Donna Abela and first published on March 23rd in 2014, deals with Sophia, an archeology student, who’s Palestinian father Sahir and Jordanian mother Mara came to Australia as a first generation of so called Arab Australians in order to live a better life. The play establishes from the visit of aunt Azza from Jordan, who is willing to attend the wedding of Loren, Sophie’s sister.

In Liz Flahive’s play From Up Here, she explains how a family deals with the aftermath and acceptance of a school shooting at the hands of their son/brother. In some way or another they all deal with the acceptance, or lack thereof, from those that are around them. Many themes are covered in this play such as betrayal, acknowledgment and looking deeper than what is on the surface. In the beginning of the show you get this overwhelming feeling that this family has does not listen to each other.
James watched as Mommy continued to avoid her life. He started to avoid everyone and everything just like his mother would do. He analyzed that, “Just like Mommy did years before me, I began my own process of running, emotionally disconnecting myself from her, as if by doing so I could keep her suffering from touching me” (138). Watching as his mother suffered instilled his feelings. He couldn’t bear it anymore, anymore, which forced him to “run away.”
This proves that although James is trying to or into his family, his emotion(s) put a major roadblock in his path. Another reason that supports this idea is on page 4. While and after the kitten is dying, he lets his emotions pour over and doesn’t care what his family sees of him, only about the dead kitten.
Through seeing and experiencing how his mother felt, James was able to develop a sense of trust in black people knowing his mother found them to be safe but; he also knew his mother was different that other “white folks” as she didn’t feel differently among black people. The way she felt at ease with those of another race helped James feel more comfortable with who he is. This part of the memoir shows as James could never truly find where he fits in a college seeing it as he “always found myself squeezed between black and white” so he took after what he had seen from his mother in this part, “I fled to the black side, just as my mother had done, and did not emerge unless driven out by smoke and fire. Being mixed is like that tingling feeling you have in your nose just before you sneeze--you’re waiting for it to happen but it never does. Given my black face and upbringing it was easy for me to flee into the anonymity of blackness”
James’s mother plays a paramount role towards James’s perspective on the
Before reading this musical, I did not have good idea of what it was about. I thought it was a comedy in some ways, but I did not except it to be so dramatic. This musical touches on subjects that are very fragile. I did not expect the son to be a ghost, and to have died when he was younger, and he is a ghost in the musical. With the musical being so emotional, there is a lot of adult content.
James relied heavily on his mother during his childhood but as he grew older he realized that he struggled so much because he never knew where she fit in. “It took many years to find out who she was, partly because I never knew who I was. It wasn’t so much a question of searching for myself as it was my own decision not to look. As a boy, I was confused about issues of race but did not consider myself deprived or unhappy. As a young man I had no time or money or inclination to look beyond my own poverty to discover what identity was.”
It was there morbidity. This was the real issue between us as it had been between her and my father,”(45). James’s mother is desperate to cure her son of his lies, so much as she doesn’t realize that she is hurting him. James’s mother is distraught and is upset with the fact that he is an outsider and unlike his other siblings. Because his mother does not understand his problem James is yearning to get away from her and find out who he can be without being under the influence of her.
On March 28th, I had the pleasure of attending the Broadway show called “The Play That Goes Wrong,” located at the Lycuem Theatre on 149 West 45th Street. On this particular Tuesday evening, I just had a vibe that something wrong was going to happen in this play – shockingly. I did believe this play will truly be memorable judging by the fun quirk of the show’s name. After watching the performance for about two hours, I can conclude that this play went beyond my expectation as its set disasters and characters amusingly caught the attention of me and the rest of the audience.
