Only in the states can an individual compete at a publicized level while obtaining a college degree (“Mark Emmert”). Such combination of a commercialized business and an educational institute alludes to the debate on student athlete’s wages. However, the opposing side rises above on study-ridden research. Facts can conclude that college athletes should not be paid. Therefore, before the NCAA starts handing out large salaries, administration must consider not only the negative aftereffects of raised tuition and lost revenue, but the handouts a student athlete already receives. The NCAA has been known for (National College Athletic Association) awarding a large sum of $1.5 billion in athletic scholarships each year (Lewis and Williams 22). Such benefit allows athletes to earn the priceless value of a education for free (Roberts). Not only that, but by obtaining an degree an individual adds almost $17, 089 per year to a future career pay (Schneider). Studies have concluded that these degrees are almost unearned. According to former tutor at the University of North Carolina, students conduct “alleged academic fraud and corruption” through easy grading and “so-called paper classes” (Neuhauser 11). In addition to a valued education, students receive benefits of free travel, medical, dental, and vision insurance, course supplies, as well as a clothing allowance (Gerdy). Student athletes already receive their form of pay. With the value of an education and a rare opportunity to play in a publicized environment, athletes should not be paid.
