Abortion is the the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. In the late 1800’s, abortion was illegal in almost all states except in the case to save the life of the woman. Abortion was illegal in an attempt to confine women to typical childbearing roles and, with concern about the declining birthrate among whites, to encourage white women to reproduce. Because abortion was illegal, the women who did want abortions had to take dangerous steps to terminate their pregnancy, risking their lives.
