Analyzing Descartes 'Meditation'

In this essay, I am going to argue that Neo could have learned many things from Descartes Meditations while he was in the Matrix, and before he learns he was in the Matrix. First, I am going to explain Descartes point and then, I will show how it is applied to the Matrix. To start this off, I’m going to talk about the first Meditation. In the first meditation, Descartes was talking about “certainty”. He was trying to find a base of knowledge so reliable that the strongest of skepticisms cannot destroy it. Descartes bring up situations or scenarios of how we can be deceived from our own senses. For example, Descartes states that, “Whatever I have up till now accepted as most true I have acquired either from senses or through the sense. But from time to time I have found that the senses deceive, and it is prudent never to trust completely those who have deceived us even once” (page 12). …show more content…

Additionally, if Neo read Descartes meditations then he would have questioned more things when he didn’t know he was in the Matrix and this could have helped him realize that maybe he is being deceived. Additionally, this could have helped Neo later on in the movie when he finds out that he is actually being deceived. Later on in the movie, Neo finally knows that the real world he thought he was living in was actually not the real world. His friend, Morpheus, helped him understand that. There’s this quote said by Morpheus in the movie that states, “Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that
