In First Day Fly by Jason Reynolds, published in 2021, the first day of school is tomorrow and the author is getting prepared by washing his clothes, ironing his clothes, cleaning his shoes, planning out his first day of school. The author explained in great detail how he prepares himself by doing each of these tasks. Therefore, Reynolds goal is to look “fly” and be “fly” for the first day of school. This story is excellent at detailing and describing actions that could be one sentence to a paragraph. It uses plenty of rhetorical devices throughout the story as well. Throughout the story Reynolds calls what he is doing is “fly” and that he looks “fly”, implying he wants to look cool for the first day and leave a cool impression this time around. He wears his brother's jeans, unwrinkled a t-shirt and cleans his shoes in greater detail throughout the story. The author uses parallelism to describe how the “hallways do nothing but lead you to teacher and teachers do nothing but remind you that they already got their education.” Using this rhetorical device, he emphasizes that phrase to describe his opinion on what happens in school. Reynolds also uses metaphors to talk about a boy who would get his boots dirty at a construction site.
