Roman heroes carve the walls of the world with their unmatched traits. A Roman hero is an individual who displays exceptional traits of selflessness, ruthlessness, and loyalty, leaving a big legacy behind them. Starting off with our first article, “A Roman’s Honor” it mentions what is considered to be honorable in Rome. Marcus Brutus from “Julius Caesar” by Shakespeare is shown to be an honorable man who is selfless. He sacrificed his life for the benefit of Rome. In another article “The Fasces” it displays what it is like to be loyal. Brutus hits all the checks on being a Roman hero, being ruthless, saving Rome for the benefit of not just himself, but for his society, being driven by his loyalty and dedication to his home. When someone is dedicated, they display their loyalty towards the cause and Brutus is dedicated to Rome. Being loyal to a society does not just benefit society, but also the person giving their loyalty too. In the same way, hurting a community will hurt the predator too. Brutus talks to Cassius, expressing his sense of honor and duty to Rome and portrays his loyalty by saying: “For let the gods so speed me as I love / The name of honour more than I fear death” (1.2 167-170). By valuing the honor he gets from Rome rather than his own life, he is willing to risk everything if it means that he is able to be honorable and display his loyalty to Rome. This mindset all in all leads him to join the conspiracy and murder Caesar, fearing that Caesar will turn Rome into a dictatorship, dishonoring the place he calls home. Brutus displays all the traits of a hero like loyalty, proving to Rome that he has honor for his home and is willing to die for it.
