As the the show is set in the eighties, big hair was common practice back in the time period, and in the show it was no different. Many members of the company had large over the top wigs, which while was very over the top, considering the show, it was comedic enough. Most of the costumes consisted of a jean/leather jacket with a band t-shirt for most guys, and for the girls it was a toss up between 80s it girl, 80s hippie wear, and “striper”-esque costumes for the strippers. The biggest complaint, costume-wise, is that Stacie Jaxx’ character wore leggings and a very revealing shirt. It wouldn’t have been that big of a problem if no for the fact that he was supposed to be some lady killing hunk, and the actor was anything but a complete dad.

There is always something trendy in the United States, and in the early to mid 20th century, it was the color pink and the (pink) flamingo. The first recorded cases of narcolepsy were noted in medical journals in the 1880’s. The late Jean Baptiste Édouard Gélineau was the first to discover and give the disorder its name(Goodrick, S. Inspired by social icons in the news, most American followed suit in the crazy hair trends, soon making them the norm. Following the trend of consumerism, dressing for success also became big as citizens tried to mimic the wealth and beauty they had come to know in icons of the time. Genres of dressing also arose in the contrasting styles of “Preppy” and “Street Style”. The first favoring the typical white-suburban look, many wore pastel polos, sweaters, Keds shoes, and jean or khaki pants. Street style, however; followed the rise of Hip Hop and Pop, taking inspiration more from music stars in the form of sequin dresses, colorful athleisure pieces, wild prints, and outrageous colors.
The short story “A&P” by John Updike introduces us to a young teenager named Sammy who worked at the A&P grocery store looking to find his freedom. Throughout reading A&P, I 've noticed the main character Sammy had a very keen eye that spotted every minor detail. When Sammy saw the three teenage girls only wearing bathing suits enter the grocery store, he perceived the girls dressed as if they were going to the beach. Sammy explained to us in detail the different bathing suits that the girls were wearing and their physical appearances. The primary symbol represented in this story is the bathing suits worn by the three teenage girls.
But in the 1990’s, a television show, That 70’s Show, debuted and addressed the real issues in the 1970’s. Although the premise of That 70’s Show is mostly accurate to the 1970’s, there are still aspects and values of the 1970’s that would not be addressed if the show had debuted in the 1970’s rather than the 1990’s.
