Historically, these people in power and held such status were expected to be presented in certain ways. They weren’t allowed to look “comfortable” or “normal.” As Givhan stated her thinking, “Dressing appropriately is a somewhat selfless act” (Para 8) she was trying to give the reader the feeling that the Roberts family were going against this stereotype and needed to be judged for it. To tag along, she illustrates an analogy about the family’s attire, “His wife and children stood before the cameras, groomed and glossy in pastel hues - like a trio of Easter eggs, a handful of Jelly Bellies, three little Necco wafers.” (Para 2)
A particularly effective element of the production was the use of costume. The costumes exposed the time period, transporting the audience back to 1981, immediately involving me in the story. Costume represented the social class the characters belonged to. Mr and Mrs Lyons were rich and had a high social status, their costume established their character; Mr. Lyons was wearing a suit and Mrs. Lyons wore tights and uniform.
During the Victorian Era, women are looked down upon on, and the idea of this is being expressed in many ways in daily life. Their clothing were tide and inconvenient to restricting them to fulfill daily tasks. The main character Edna wore different clothes from other mother women to resemble herself rather than doing what others expects from her. Kate Chopin, one of the greatest American writers who believed in Naturalism, implies her perspective of the restrictions for women and the societal expectations that placed on women into her writings. The idea of the desire of freedom but inability to control it, and eventually yield in front of the societal expectations.
As mentioned previously, Angelina Grimké belonged to one of Charleston’s premier families; accordingly, she undoubtedly participated in a number of high society events, balls parties, picnics, teas, and other traditional festivities throughout her young adulthood. However, after departing from Charleston in 1829, Angelina joined her older sister Sarah in Philadelphia and eventually became a member of the Quaker church in 1831. Angelina’s involvement in the Society of Friends undoubtedly impacted her mannerisms and style of clothing throughout the 1830s. Because my impression highlights Angelina’s public career during the 1830s, I will attempt to develop a costume that reflects her Quaker background and faithful membership in the Society of Friends. Nineteenth-century Victorian dress emerged simultaneously with the 1837 accession of Queen Victoria, and involved a plethora of differing styles and aesthetics.
This meant that there was a dramatic increase of women wearing pants (Guenther, 2004) [Figures 1 & 2] because they needed more comfortable and practical clothing to be able to work the heavy labour jobs they had taken over while the men were away at war (Tortora and Marcketti, 2015). Conversely, during Elizabethan times, clothing was restrictive but it was male actors who were allowed to cross-dress, as women were not allowed to act in theatres. During this time, nearly the entire population, from the upper classes to lower classes wore a ruff which encircled the neck, this dis-joined the head from the body and furthered restricted movement (Entwistle and Wilson (Eds), 2001) [Figure 3].
After World War I, women’s fashion took a turn and prospered into an exciting and new vibrant style. Society previously held tight boundaries on how women should dress. There was no law to the way they could dress, but simply that their morals were tighter and they had an unspoken, common knowledge before the 1920s of how women should dress appropriately.

As stated before, costumes and décor, affected significantly the impression of the audience and it defined a statement for Ford as a director. The costumes were chosen carefully for the various parts: black suit for George 's present, staple dresses and heavy make- up for Charlotte and white clothes for both Jim, Kenny and past
How would Decoras impact NEISD dress code?Is this style affect others in a good way or a bad way?I think some people find this style not professional and do not allow this at schools because at school people want students to try and look more proficient and accomplished. People decide what to wear because it’s their preference and they can do whatever they want to make their lives more enjoyable, entertaining for them and bring joyful and content for others who seem to be discompose and unsettle. People say that Decoras it’s a way they can demonstrate themselves, reveal to everyone who they’re really are. There are different styles people want to state themselves, like others have plastic surgery to get the look they desire.
The fabrics were imported from India and manufactured in the north of England which contributed to the expanding British textile trade. (White, M) However, the new fabrics were quickly available for the lower ranks of society and allowed ordinary men and women to copy their superiors. This led to what Lemire describes as democratization of fashion in Fashion’s Favourite. The influence of the new consumerist culture was therefore reflected in the new desire for fashion to appeal aesthetically as opposed to the mere usefulness of clothing.
The outfits worn by the individual characters show their personalities and give the audience the assumption of the characters. For example, Dorothy’s costume shows youthful innocence in colour. Her hair is neatly braided with soft and pleasant make-up. She also wears a blue checked pinafore. She is portrayed as perfectly innocent and sweet.
In the Victorian age, children’s condition was a problem. treated as miniature adults, they were often required to work, were severely chastised, or were ignored. Exactly in that period Charles Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carrol wrote “Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland”, a novel that tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world. It is first of all a children’s book as it has a child protagonist; however it appeals to adult readers with its advanced logical reasoning, witty puns and trenchant satire of Victorian society. So we can consider it as a drastic reaction against the impassive didacticism of British upbringing.
Modern Family is a popular primetime television show that airs Wednesday nights on ABC. The Dunphys are shown as the traditional white American family while the Pritchett-Tucker family are a homosexual couple with an adopted daughter named Lily. The Pritchetts are the last family who are an interracial couple with a large age gap. On the surface, this show seems to be one of the most diverse on television.
Enjoy the Weird Vibe of the Big Mac Shop Fashion can be absurd and weird sometimes, or shall we say, most of the time? With all the revamps and trends that circulate within the industry every now and then, the obscure and the different seem to be classified as the new type of normal. We witnessed shoes that are made of fur, tops that are made completely of sequins, Lady Gaga and her raw meat ensemble, the flower headbands used in festivals and other trends being brought to life. Truthfully, fashion attracted us into a black hole of uncertainty and yet, we have all managed to look fabulous and stylish despite the risks involved.
