An Image a Little Too Carefully Coordinated is a writing piece by Robin Givhan, a fashion editor that won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2006. She is considered to be a very blunt person that grew up in Detroit. Givhan has written about the clothes of presidential figures and been published as a prestigious writer. In this essay, Robin tries to convince her audience that the Roberts family, how they dress themselves, is distasteful and should be criticized by the public. Throughout, Givhan exemplifies the inappropriate attire displayed by our President's family and how they allow visitors to the White House to wear otherwise disingenuous attire. Historically, these people in power and held such status were expected to be presented in certain ways. They weren’t allowed to look “comfortable” or “normal.” As Givhan stated her thinking, “Dressing appropriately is a somewhat selfless act” (Para 8) she was trying to give the reader the feeling that the Roberts family were going against this stereotype and needed to be judged for it. To tag along, she illustrates an analogy about the family’s attire, “His wife and children stood before the cameras, groomed and glossy in pastel hues - like a trio of Easter eggs, a handful of Jelly Bellies, three little Necco wafers.” (Para 2) Criticizing the Northwestern University’s women's lacrosse team, Givhan wants the girls to know, “proper footwear required. Flip-flops, … meant to be worn in a public shower or on the beach, have no business anywhere in the vicinity of the president and his place of residence.” By saying this, she heavily implies that allowing this to happen is a huge mistake on the family’s behalf. Legitimizing her claim about distasteful and disingenuous clothing, she labels the family as having “went to far” with their actions.
