In the second quarter, we read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and I selected Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling as my banned book. Fahrenheit 451 relates to censorship because it is about a man whose job is to burn books because all books in that society must be destroyed. Also, coincidentally, Fahrenheit 451 itself is considered a banned or challenged book. Censorship made the old lady die with her books because she didn't want to live without them. Banning books were taken to an extreme. Beatty contradicts later on by saying, "what traitors books can be! You think they're backing you up, and they turn on you" (Bradbury 107). By this, he meant that even though books are meant to provide you with knowledge, all they do is play with your head and simply confuse you.
In the memoir of The Glass Castle written by Jeannette Walls, parenting capabilities are not the finest. Anne Frank once said, “Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands.” Although Jeannette Walls’ parents did not give their children good advice at times, they loved them very much; however, two damaging characteristics of their parenting style, selfishness and carelessness, almost destroyed the family and certainly cast a shadow over their childhood. When George Eliot said, “Selfish— a judgment readily passed by those who have never tested their own power of sacrifice,” he was describing a character trait of Jeanette's mother.
This is because books have been outlawed by the government, and the people felt that they were a threat to their joy. Books had caused controversy in society, and no matter what, some people always felt that they were targeting minorities. The First Amendment states many of the freedoms a US citizen posses, banning/censorship of books however has violated this idea of freedom. Some authors dislike the idea of censorship of books, such as Ellen Hopkins. Hopkins is a successful writer who wrote a bestselling book called, Crank. She also wrote the poem Manifesto which was adopted as the official manifesto of the American Library Association banned books week back in 2009. Crank was a book that was banned and censored, which Hopkins disliked.

Banned Books?? This passage is why books shouldn’t be banned and why it's important for parents and/or the school board to not ban books. Prohibited books are unlawful and not helpful schools. Books are an entryway to various beneficial encounters and perusing supports sympathy and social-passionate advancement.
At one point in time, over 7,220 books have been challenged to be banned. Though these books have been removed for the safety of children, not all books should be banned for many reasons. These include the fact that banning books is infringing on the First Amendment, keeping children from understanding the real world, and, even though there are many reasons for book banning, not banning books could help a student’s education and can even work against itself. Banning a book from a school or public library could go against a person’s First Amendment of the freedom of press.
Catch-22, The Catcher in the Rye, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. All of the books named are books that have been banned in America. Banned books are a problem not just in America, but all over the world. Some people do believe that books should be monitored and reviewed to make that they don’t give off unpopular opinions or hurt the public. However, just because a book is unpopular or gives unpopular opinions doesn’t mean that people should be denied from reading it.
Moreover, it takes away a citizen 's first amendment and the right to free speech. Lastly, the series, Harry Potter has inappropriate topics that led it to being banned like magic, sorcery, and witchcraft. Some books are frequently banned in schools because they contain profanity/slurs, and explicit content; however, some people argue that these precisely same books are worth reading because they teach extremely crucial life lessons, and defends the First Amendment. There are multiple reasons why parents are banning books.
