GREECE
The Origins of Ancient Greece covered over a thousand islands called the Aegean Sea and the mountains landscape surrounding the Mediterranean and Black Seas. (Ancient Greece, n.d.) The Greeks that settle on the Aegean Sea found it hard to travel by land and used the sea as means to travel from city to city. Ancient Greece comprised of small territories and villages. The people of Greece lived in city-states, each city -state was independent having its own coinage system, delict, and identity. The Greeks did feel like “one people” they all believed in the same gods and shared a common history. (Frank L. Kidner, Maria Bucur, Ralph Mathisen, Sally McKee, Theodore R. Weeks, 2013). Women, children, laborers, immigrants, and slave all have a defining role (Cartwright, 2013).
Slaves- Majority of the slaves were not Greeks, criminals or people rescued from wars were taken into slavery. Slaves worked in all occupations including in homes, in the fields, as blacksmith and in other industries. Slaves had not rights, many of them had to pay random to buy their independence or freedom.
Freedmen (Lower Class) – People that once was slaves in their past, they were either freed by the owner or bought their freedom. These people were not considered as citizens and could not gain citizenship. They were also referred to as “Freedmen”.
Laborers (Lower Class) – Semi-Free workers, the often lived with their families. They were allowed to work off their debt to their employer. Their children were not to be sold as slaves. Laborers were given no legal status and sometimes treated unfairly. In times of war laborers were required to fight, some were able to escape from their debts and live below
