Ancient Rome is portrayed today in movies with gladiators, wars, and large events held at the Roman Coliseum. Although, this is not always historically correct, large games and events were often held to keep peace within Rome. In the Ancient Roman world, the relationship between sports and both politics and social class was closely knit. This was due to the fact that almost all citizens of Ancient Rome would attend one or more of the games. That made it a key place for both political and social advancement for families, or people within the a political office because the games were used as a way to show off wealth, keep peace within Rome, and climb up the social chain. The games could be one way to establish diplomatic connections with people in higher power than people who were not. This was due to the fact that people of all social classes attended the games. Thus people who were lower on the social class chain could mingle with people in the higher class. Another way families and people showed the high standing class was if the families or people owned a gladiator. It was not uncommon for people to buy gladiators, this was because if the gladiators won certain games and became more popular than the person who “owned” the gladiator became more popular with the crowd. The sports and games held in the Ancient Roman world were important in several different aspects. They showed off wealth and power to other countries and opposing states as well as within Rome itself. They also were created to keep the peace as much as possible by keeping the people blissfully unaware of internal and external confrontations. The games would also allow people to climb up social chains and become large political and social figures within their community.
