Before watching the Goodbye, Lenin! and That was the GDR-A History of the Other Germany: I was a Citizen of the GDR and We are the People, my image of West Berlin and East Berlin wasn’t very clear. I saw East Germany as just bad people who built the Wall around the West Berliners to not let them spread their views to the other parts of Germany and I saw West Berlin as more of a laid back more liberal area. These films definitely help clear my confusion on the two areas and the struggle between them as a whole. Although in the film Goodbye, Lenin! some actions done by Alex didn’t make sense to me, and how he went out of the way to cover these things about the new Germany. And That was the GDR-A History of the Other Germany: I was a Citizen of the GDR and We are the People, I didn’t have much knowledge of what happened with West Berlin and East Berlin. I knew that the Berlin wall was put up around West Berlin and that it was done so to protect East Berlin from the so called “fascists” in West Berlin. I didn’t know the struggles of the people of both. I never really knew what it was all about. After watching them, I was much more knowledgeable of the struggles and problems faced by the people of both sides. I learned things like the economic problems that affected all of Germany, that the Wall was put up because East Berlin was considered West Berliners fascists, and that you were considered an enemy of the state if you were from West
