War is based on fear and threats. The Cold War and The Butter Battle Book have many similarities in people and events and should be exposed to children through children literature books. The Cold War was a period of economic, political, and military tension between the United States and the Soviet Union from 1945 to 1991. The Berlin Wall was a major key point in the Cold War. It was constructed under the control of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and East German leader Walter Ulbricht. After World War II ended, the victorious Allies, the United States, the Soviet Union, France, and Great Britain, held the Potsdam and Yalta conference. All four countries came to agreement to divide the control of Germany, with Berlin as the capital city. …show more content…

In the book, the Yooks and Zooks are separated by a wall because the Yooks spread their bread with the butter side up while the Zooks spread their bread with the butter side down. Grandpa Yook explains to his grandchild how spreading their bread with the butter side up is the way to go and how his grandchild should not trust any Zook that spreads his bread with the butter side down. The wall was put up to separate the two rivals. If any Zook dared to come near the wall, grandpa Yook would give them a twinch with his Snick-Berry Switch. According to grandpa Yook that worked perfectly fine for a while and kept the Yooks side of the wall safe from the Zooks. It was until one day a very impolite Zook by the name of Van'Itch snuck up on grandpa Yook and used a slingshot to destroy grandpas Yooks Snick-Berry Switch. Grandpa Yook went to his Chief Yookeroo in disappointment and informed him of the rebellious Van'Itch and what he had done to him. In the book, Yooks can be most likely assumed to be the United States by their blue uniform and the Zooks are the Soviet Union by their red uniform. In the book Yooks and Zooks are long time rivals much like the United States and the Soviet Union. During the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union became rivals after World War II because of the Soviet Unions communist government. It was capitalism versus communism. In Butter Battle the Yooks are strongly against spreading the butter on their bread upside down and strongly believe that they are right by spreading the butter on their bread side up which is why they began to build a wall so they could prevent the wrongful ways of the Zooks from entering the Yooks side. It is much of the same with the United States and the Soviet Union. The Berlin Wall was meant to keep East German civilians from migrating into the Allied West. The Soviet Union wanted the wall to protect its citizens from capitalist
