And Then I Met Margaret is a collection of nonfictional stories written by Rob White. Each chapter introduces a different part of his life in which he learned a distinct lesson that altered his life in some form. The stories range from simple mistakes as a child to deep realizations made through various careers. White reminds the reader that throughout life, there will be several people to guide you down the right paths, whether they do so directly or indirectly. Each chapter includes a "myth" that the author once believed was true, which introduces the anecdote that follows. At the end of the chapter, he restates the "myth", and then includes the "reality" that he learned from each experience. These statements successfully establish clarity in regards to the individual messages that the author is trying to convey. They also contribute to the novel, as they are a unique aspect that only this book could benefit from completely. It was my favorite defining feature of this literary work. …show more content…
He openly stated his mistakes, presenting them in an understandable light. He addresses his previous faults as normal, which allows the reader to relate to them and think about their own mistakes without guilt. The solutions could actually be beneficial to readers, as the lessons comprised in this novel are based on mundane errors. For example, the first chapter is based on the lesson that kindness is based on love. Before understanding the truth regarding his aunt's small sacrifices for him, he thought that kindness was solely based on self-interest and self-gain. I think many people forget the reason that we should be kind to one another is simply because it is right. Instead, many people think about personal gain through being nice to others. This relatable mindset presents a common problem in a way that allows people to reflect and possibly change
