A hero in disguise, a philanthropist at heart, Andrew Carnegie was one of the richest and most successful businessmen in America in the 19th century. Andrew was born November 25th, 1835 in Dunfermline, Scotland then later moved to America, when he was 13, where he worked a series of jobs involving telegraphing and railroad construction. Carnegie, being the mastermind he was, clawed his way out of poverty with hard work and determination into a life of riches when he founded his own steel production company, Carnegie Steel Company, in 1889. Andrew Carnegie is considered an American hero due to his inspirational work ethics, his means of sharing his wealth, and his contribution to the American economy. Andrew Carnegie was a hero for his inspiring work tactics that helped produce more successful businesses and individualist ideals in the 1890’s. Andrew grew up in Scotland until he was 13 in extreme poverty, however he always knew he wanted more out of life than that. So he worked many different jobs growing up in America to get him more experience, more money, and more know-how in the business field. Carnegie was extremely influential and inspiring to Americans, especially those in the working class. Andrew, being the generous man he was, paid his workers the highest out of any other business, according to Historical Statistics of the United States. This contributed largely to the American economy because it was the beginning path of increased wages in the future, and convinced more people to change businesses; most commonly chosen was machinery and steel companies, which eventually led to an industrial revolution. Another example of Carnegie’s contribution to the American economy was his image. If he did not express his wealth and boost his image to be the billionaire he was, many people would not be inspired to work hard and evolve the economy. In the photos of Carnegie’s houses in 1835 then in 1897, found in the Library of Pittsburgh, it convinced people to invest and to work hard, which all together raised the economy, and furthered the revolution of the evolving America.
