The free enterprise system offered Andrew Carnegie unrestricted industrial power, used by profit focused individuals like himself. Andrew Carnegie went on to become one of the wealthiest men of the 19th century. He came into the nicknames of "the steel magnate" and the "oil baron". Early on Carnegie had the strong characteristics of a successful entrepreneur. Carnegie had a ruthless financial and organizational skill and a great appetite for cost efficient production, and a keen eye for innovation.
The Gilded Age was an era of rapid growth in the Americas, between 1870 and 1900. Early industrialists, like John D. Rockefeller, set out to create monopolies. In 1859, hundreds of people rushed to Pennsylvania to industrialize oil. Although they were ruthless competitors and hard-nosed employers, early industrialists like John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie should be remembered most as "captains of industry" because their grit and resourcefulness left an invaluable positive impact on American society. It is true that some industrialists exhibit a few qualities of a robber baron.
A Captain of Industry is used to describe a successful businessman. Carnegie created an efficient steel industry. He did this by, converting iron into steel and built a new steel plant for his company called, Carnegie Steel Company. In the excerpt, “Who was Andrew Carnegie,” the author says, “Carnegie changed huge batches of iron into steel, which was much more flexible than brittle iron. Carnegie threw his own money into the process and even borrowed heavily to build a new steel plant near Pittsburgh.”
Andrew Carnegie was one of the industrial leaders who produced most of the steel in the U.S. He could be considered a Captain of Industry due to the steel and the monetary contributions. Carnegie produced steel that helped the expansion of the U.S. Carnegie created the process of adding scrap metals to molten iron to molten iron making the production more efficient, and he also had vertical integration making the production more efficient. With these different methods of making production more efficient, the U.S. could expand and grow more easily with new railroads and buildings. This was a positive contribution to the U. S. Later in life, Carnegie donated 90% of his wealth to charities and projects.
Andrew Carnegie was one of the most famous and wealthiest American industrialist during the Industrial Age. He was a robber baron who made a fortune in the steel industry and applied vertical integration to his business. Carnegie contradicted his views as a robber baron because he supported, but destroyed many unions. This made many of his views unethical.
“I began to stop accumulating and begin the infinitely more serious and difficult task of wise distribution,” as said by Andrew Carnegie. The industrialist and hard-working Andrew Carnegie was a very successful businessman and philanthropist. Andrew Carnegie provided the United States economy to rise due to his steel production in the 1800’s and 1900’s. Although some may think Carnegie was a brutal businessman, Andrew Carnegie enhanced the United States due to his business investments, his philanthropy, and his educational institutions. One way Andrew Carnegie enhanced The United States is his business investments.
The context of Andrew Carneige becoming a Robber Baron is the Industrial Revolution, because the industrialization is the explosion of factories and the mass production of consumer goods such as steel. The industrial revolution act set the economic foundation that allowed Andrew Carnegie to create the monopoly that is carnegie steel. Some will argue that Andrew Carnegie is a Captain of industry because in Document 9 he wanted to make sure the people had a good lifestyle, but the evidence supports he is a Robber Baron because he used his wealth for more money and he also didn’t show any humanization towards the people. With this new influx of workers and business, numerous so called “Captains of Industry" were born. Men such as Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller were men who came from nothing, but made fortunes off their innovations in the steel and oil industries. While their actions greatly benefitted the American economy, their monopolistic desires earned them a sinister reputation. These captains both had a disdain for competition and would do everything in their power to eliminate or absorb any opponents in order to gain more influence.
The Captains of Industry wanted what was best for America in the industrial and economic side of the country’s growth during the Industrial Revolution. Men like those Captains came to America while it was in a transitional phase of sorts. America was welcoming new immigrants and starting to dive into the Industrial Age, and it continuously challenged the minds of its people every day. Captains of industry created new revenue for the country, as it could sell these inventions to other countries and gain a higher status and more money. Also, they created lasting inventions, and top-of-the-line products that we use today.
The Captains of Industry were certainly one of the most important factors in the development of United States in the period directly after the Civil War. While there is some merit to the argument that the industrial leaders were Robber Barons that did more harm than good, their contributions to American society clearly outweigh those negatives. The Captains of Industry quite literally revolutionized the American way of life that gave the U.S. the highest standard of living in the world prior to the outbreak of World War I. This was made possible due to the emergence of corporations in areas such as finance, steel, oil, and railroads. The boom of industrialization in the United States lead to several changes throughout the nation that forever affected both the economy, as well as workers within it. One such worker was named Andrew Carnegie, who as a boy began in a very poor family, but then throughout his life worked hard to advance up to one of the highest positions in the steel manufacturing industry. This made his presence widely known throughout the American economy, and furthermore later brought up the argument: was Andrew Carnegie a hero? Throughout his life, though primarily during his career, Andrew Carnegie made several debatable choices concerning his work. These choices further clouded the argument as to whether he was a hero or not.
Carnegie was extremely influential and inspiring to Americans, especially those in the working class. Andrew, being the generous man he was, paid his workers the highest out of any other business, according to Historical Statistics of the United States. This contributed largely to the American economy because it was the beginning path of increased wages in the future, and convinced more people to change businesses; most commonly chosen was machinery and steel companies, which eventually led to an industrial revolution. Another example of Carnegie’s contribution to the American economy was his image. If he did not express his wealth and boost his image to be the billionaire he was, many people would not be inspired to work hard and evolve the economy.

However, education and putting one’s life into books was very important to the Carnegie family and was forced upon Andrew Carnegie growing up.
