Anesthesiologists are medical doctors who keep a patient comfortable, safe and pain-free during surgery by administering local or general anesthetic. Once the patient enters the operating room, an anesthesiologist will be by their side throughout the entire surgery, making sure they are stable right through to the post- anesthesia care unit. Anesthesiology is a renowned and remunerative field of medicine, but requires an abundance of education and expertise (“Anesthesiologist”).

The anesthesiologist will monitor each breath, for a general anesthetic. This is done by measuring the volume of breath exhaled and the amount of carbon dioxide in each breath. The anesthesiologist may also measure the amount of blood the heart is pumping and blood pressure inside the lung vessels (“Anesthesiologist”).
To become an anesthesiologist you need great education. In high school you can prepare for a medical career by concentrating on highly advanced science classes such as chemistry and biology. Volunteering or working at a hospital to receive first-hand experience working around healthcare professionals and patients is also another way to prepare (“American Society of Anesthesiologists - How to Prepare for a Career in Anesthesiology”).
Undergraduate studies contain different knowledge you need to know. College students interested in a medical career should complete liberal arts requirements but plan a pre-med course of study.
