According to psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth, author of the popular book Grit: the Power of Passion and Perseverance and a MacArthur "genius" award winner. Grit is an often-ignored psychological trait that can help explain why some individuals succeed when others with equal or greater ability do not. (Duckworth et.al, 2007). In some institutions the dropout rate is as high 46% and even higher among Black and Hispanic students (Kelly, 2006; Barefoot, 2004). However, studies show that first-year college students who maintain high levels of religiosity, that is, participate in and conform to the religious beliefs and requirements of a particular denomination, tend to out perform their college peers academically (Jeynes, 2003). A religiously committed person is supposed to “adhere to his or her religious values, beliefs, and practices and use them in daily living” (Worthington et al., 2003, p. 85).
