In amy tan’s “ fish cheeks “, Tan’s uses a motif to express her main message. The motif that is carried throughout the story is culture and a message she ties into that is that always keep culture close to who you are. In the short story tan tells us something she learned from her mom was if you are “want[ing] to be the same as american on the outside… but [on the] inside you must always be chinese.” ( tan 7 ) tan tells us this because she wants us to realize that it doesn't matter who or what we are; meaning if we are wanting to be american great but keep your culture close to and apart of you.
Dependence On Individuality: Animal Imagery in Charles Baxter’s “Gryphon” People should be free to express their individuality. A person, whose existence is dependent on the community and the boundaries set by the community, will never have the ability to move above the common existence. In the story “Gryphon” by Charles Baxter, Tommy, an elementary school student in the rural community of Five Oaks believes that his life is boring, but he is convinced by the uniqueness of substitute teacher Miss Ferenczi. Miss Ferenczi came in as a substitute teacher for Mr. Hibler’s fourth grade who is suffering from cold.
In the Etruscan sarcophagus, the sides are dedicated to depicting a pediment on both ends, each containing three female heads in rosettes, a chariot driven by a man of importance, given he is holding a pastoral staff, and two women riding in a cart with “A winged spirit of death waving two snakes at them”. The left side with the winged spirit of death potentially represents the idea of rebirth, as that is what the serpent commonly meant in mythology. The right side is a bit more problematic when trying to interpret, as all that is shown is a magistrate on a two horse chariot with another man. There are almost no themes to interpret other than the chariot, which was a common item in Etruria, as horses and equestrian arts were prevalent because of the Etruscans’ Greek influence. The front of the Etruscan sarcophagus, however, offers more to be interpreted.
The two works of art I will be comparing art "Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts" found in chapter six page 198, and "Death and the Matron" found in chapter 22 page 689. These two works of art were created roughly 1400 years apart, these two pieces also both have connections to Germany, "Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts" is now housed in Berlin, and "Death and the Matron" was created by a German artist in a town located on the French, German, and Swiss border. Though at first glance these two works of art might appear to have two different subjects, upon further inspection they are similar not only in origin but also in content. In Hoffman’s The River King, the rabbit motif accentuates the idea that the passiveness of innocence corrupted in communities is a direct result of dominant figures holding power over the vulnerable individual. Gus and the Chalk House boys are a prime display of the relationship between dominant figures and the ones they take power over, and the torment of Gus and the rabbits portrays the innocence of the underclassmen being beaten down. The Chalk House boys are shown to be consistently injuring rabbits, and it’s seen as a very frequent and passive event for them—they exert their dominance by “suggest[ing] to the new boys that they look for one of the rabbits found in the meadows and the woods. Humans and animals are more alike than most people would think. They often act the same way, and do similar things. Animal behaviors are used to describe humans and their actions, especially in literature. In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, he uses naturalism to get his point across. Steinbeck uses animal imagery to emphasize power, including how Lennie has physical power over other people, George has power over Lennie, and Curley and his wife are seen as weak and helpless.
Throughout the painting there is iconography and symbolism. To illustrate his authority, the Kangxi sits on a dragon throne, which raises him higher than his court. With Kangxi being the Emperor, his feet were not to touch the ground. The Dragon is thought to be the guardian and aide to the Emperor. In addition, the dragon is also repeated on his robe several times.
As shown in Figure 1, Tomb of the Leopards received its' title because of the artwork containing images of two leopards depicted in paint facing one another above the paintings of a banquet. In interpretation, the leopards symbolized hunting activities and perhaps suggest as the properties of the dead. The attendees of the banquet painted below the Leopards are composed of two pair of male and female in the left and right portions of the fresco and a pair of male in the middle, all of whom are dressed in brightly colours. In Etruscan art, females are depicted in fair skin tone whereas males are portrayed in a much darker skin tone, inspired by the Greek, being the convention among greek art depicting males and females during that period. The Tomb of the Leopards indicates a festivity or banquet where women were participated in as oppose to Greek and Roman societies where females were regarded as inferior therefore had no rights to attend.
The Germanic style of art called Animal art is a characterized by the distorted animals that it depicts, and it's seemingly random shaped objects that at closer inspection are made up of small symmetric shapes. The distorted animals are described at twisted and stretched, and sometimes made up of significant parts of other animals. The griffin is a an example of this style, which is a beast made up of an eagle head, and a lion body. Many examples of this art are made of gold and enamel with different highly valuable gems to emphasize features. There exists three styles categorized as Style I, II, and III which preceded one another over 200 years in particular.

The Mughal rule, which roughly extended from 1526 to 1707, was a period when the political and natural environments of much of the Indian subcontinent underwent drastic change. The Mughals had a deep fascination towards nature but also acknowledged their superiority, both as humans and as royals, over it as well as the tribal societies that lived amidst nature. Their constant involvement in warfare led them to look at the forest and animals such as elephants and horses as precious resources; consequently, the military demands of an empire the size of the Mughals’ took a toll on these resources. Extensively engaging with nature for political and social purposes, the Mughals played an important role in transforming the pluralistic landscapes that fell under their empire. But more importantly, they paved the way for the colonial period to extract resources from nature in an intensive way; the impact of their engagement with nature was felt strongly only during the later colonial period.
Marlowe’s images are mainly decorative and ornamental. For example, Mycetes’ horses with their milk-white legs fantastically splashed with crimson blood are a decorative detail. When Tamburlaine says that he will “Batter the shining palace of the Sun, /And shiver all the starry firmament” (p.89), Marlowe reaches the highest of purely decorative imagery. Ellis-Fermor considers that in Tamburlaine, “there is much that is not effective rhetoric.” In this case, Marlowe’s images are not in harmony with the emotions forming the background of the passage and serve rather to illustrate them than to imply any association.
