A long time ago in the savannah of Africa, animals were known to perform in a great competition every year to test which animal was the best at what they did. There was a strength competition, where those who competed were to pull a Baobab tree out of its roots, and whoever did it with the most ease was the winner. There was a beauty competition, where all those colorful birds of Africa were known to dazzle to judges with their bright plumage.
But the most popular competition was the speed competition, where all the land animals could show off their prowess and steal the coveted title for the fastest animal in the savanna. What could he do now, if none of the runners he so wanted to impress, laughed at the thought of him trying? As if his thoughts were heard aloud, Ostrich was approached by a fit man, his body yet worn down by living in the savanna. He approached quietly and without warning, yet Ostrich still recognized the man, as he was the sole judge of the running contest.
“The contestants make fun of you for your stature and your species, but I see potential,” he stated, demanding Ostrich’s attention, “I have been known to outrun many men and animals a time ago. If you are willing to listen to what I have learned during my time as an athlete, I will help you train for the competitions next year.”
More than willing to take any chance he could get, Ostrich agreed to start training with the man that very day. They trained during the mild season, during sand-storms, and even during the gruelling hot season. They ran together over hills, over sand, and even through the water sometimes. The man told Ostrich everything he knew about being a good runner, and Ostrich listened, just like he had promised. They were running in some of Africa’s most treacherous areas with ease when the competitions had finally come around
