Anna Mae Pictou Aquash was an activist for Native American rights. The group consisted of individuals who were fighting for Native American rights, and was called American Indian Movement. This group also sought to publicize the wrong doings of the government. They told the events of misconduct that occurred to the public, and made it well known that the AIM group and people associated with the group doesn’t think Native Americans are being shown the same right as other citizens. The group expressed their thoughts on many occasions and many different locations, and in these stories being expressed the Native American people and tribes are being disrespected. This shows the citizens of the United States that the Native Americans are the same as them. The only difference is their culture, which they want to be respected. The government isn’t happy about this turn of events. The group’s protests were gaining status, and the government became well known of the group and their message. Anna Mae Pictou Aquash rose as a well-known member of the group in the 1970’s (Mihesuah 269). This probably created a big target on her back from supporters of the government and perhaps jealous members of the AIM group. It wouldn’t have been out of the norm for resentful members to try to take attention off of a popular person, in this instance it’s Anna Aquash. They might have even planned to “take care” of Anna. However, in many situation like this the issues run deep and internally, which leads to cover ups. Perhaps even people getting paid off to keep quiet, and maybe even threatened to be killed if they spoke
