In many cases, book reviews are either about how the book was outstanding or terrible, depending on the reader’s opinion. I recently read the nonfiction book Anne Frank: A Diary of a Young girl edited by Mirjam Pressler which contains many “greats” as well as a few “lousy”. This nonfiction book is an autobiography written by a young Anne Frank, about her life as a Jewish girl during the Holocaust. Her style, mood, and voice are expressed throughout the entire novel, as it was her confidante throughout her experiences of the Holocaust. Her writing style is fluent and mature, seemingly effortless as she is simply writing down her own thoughts. She uses strong vocabulary such as “clandestine” and “propriety” which shows her maturity, but talks of youthful topics showing us she is still very much a child. Anne lost her innocent air as the years progressed in hiding and you can track that as her story continues. The things she talks about starting out as mere stories, tales of what goes on in the annex but quickly shift to the issues and the longing she has to leave that place. For example, there were certain areas where Anne got entirely off-topic and the section was not enjoyable. On pages 175 and 176, Anne starts describing the female anatomy, which has nothing to do with her life in hiding but does reinforce the fact that it is indeed a young girl's diary. There are other instances where the writing becomes somewhat dull as well, however, this can only be expected as all books have those areas. Oftentimes Anne’s diary was very repetitive as well. Anne was always talking about the new quarrels going on inside the house and how no one was getting along. The quarrels and complaints of the 8 housemates fulfill most of the
