Anne’s family are expecting her to be to be ‘perfect’ so she can marry into a good family, this is no easy struggle for any teenager as everyone wants to please their parents. Anne’s self-esteem dropped. She says that “One’s job is to look so totally ravishing that the marriage settlements are signed and sealed by the end of one’s first season”. Anne is so accustomed to having to be the perfect daughter and ‘trophy’ wife that she knows no different.
Like most girls her age, Anne Frank also wallowed in the trivialities of adolescence: boys, gossip, and stormy standoffs with her Mother, Edith. Anne kept her diary from June 1942, to August 1944, when the Gestapo raided the family's hiding place. In the first entries in the diary Anne tells that she has just turned 13 years old . She seems to bubbly with laughter and loves to live, playing Ping-Pong, participating in pranks, and flirting with boys. Although she seems popular with her friends at school and is loved by her parents, Anne feels lonely.

At points Anne was loud or pretty noisy, but she was a teenage kid what else do you expect them to do. She always was keeping people happy, but there were sometimes she made them upset. Once in the middle of the night she had a nightmare about getting taken by the nazi’s and woke up everyone in the house. But like I said in the second paragraph she made gifts on the first night of Hanukkah because she believes that it would not be a Hanukkah without gifts. She hand-made the gifts so that people could get some.
In the play The Diary of Anne Frank, each character has a colorful personality, which causes a diversity in character traits amongst everyone. In particular, two very unique characters are Anne and Mr. Dussel. Throughout the course of the story, many different traits can be established for each of these two characters. Anne appears to be a cheerful and bold young girl while Mr. Dussel seems dull and quite selfish at certain points throughout the play. Anne is quite an extrovert, and she likes to be social with anyone that will hold a conversation with her.
She writes in her diary, “You no doubt want to hear what I think of being in hiding. Well, all I can say is that I don't really know yet. I don't think I'll ever feel at home in this house, but that doesn't mean I hate it. It's more like being on vacation in some strange pension” (StudySync). Even though Anne knows she is supposed to hate the place she is at, she still manages to compare it with something happy.

Within these wars, two little girls that have been apart of it their whole lives, have shared their experiences through a diary and a book of stories. The Diary of Anne Frank is about a young jewish girl named Anne Frank, who has to go into hiding with her family in order to not get caught and taken away by the Nazis in Amsterdam, and while in hiding, records her experiences and thoughts into her diary. Farewell to Manzanar is a book based on a girl named Jeanne Wakatsuki who is seven years old at the time, and gets taken away with her family to Manzanar encampments, as the U.S. government doesn’t want to risk any Japanese Americans possibly giving up information to the Japanese as they are at war with them. Anne Frank and Jeanne Wakatsuki have many similarities and differences throughout their lifetimes on the run from the war.
At age 13, Anne Frank received her diary for her birthday during the time of the Holocaust. Anne was too young to be experiencing such a tragic event, but she found ways to cope with it. She wrote about every event that occurred during her time in the Secret Annex with 8 other occupants. Anne was very intelligent and surely good at writing. Anne could change the emotion of any event.
Anne was seeing the good in the really awful situation that she was in at the time. This explains how people are truly good at heart because she is trying to reassure herself and others that everything will work out and be ok in the end. Anne says “I think the world is going through a phase, the way I was with Mother. It’ll pass, maybe not for hundreds of years, but someday . . . “ Despite everything that is happening Anne still believes that it will be over soon and that everything will be ok.
