The Top of the Hill In the words of George Elliot “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” Ivan is a Silverback gorilla we encounter who has been living in a mall a majority of his life. When faced with a new challenge we will see if Ivan can rise to what he has promised. In this story, “The brief chapters read like free-verse poetry, the extra line breaks between paragraphs driving home the contrast between Ivan and humans, who in his opinion, "waste words. They toss them like banana peels and leave them to rot.(Publishers)” The language in this book makes it easier for children to understand and have a greater impact of the morals or themes to come. In order to express his plea in a painting, Ivan must bravely face buried memories of the lush jungle, his family and their brutal murder, which is recounted in a brief, powerful chapter sure to arouse readers' passions. In a compelling ending, the more challenging question Applegate poses is whether or not Ivan will remember what it was like to be a gorilla. Spot art captures poignant moments throughout.
