In “Reading and Thought” by Dwight Macdonald, Macdonald raises the idea of reading deeply and how our society has changed its reading style. He points out that our modern society constantly reads irrelevant information in articles, newspapers, or magazines in our daily lives. A term called “functional curiosity” is a person’s interest in being amused, entertained or wanting to know what’s happening around the world. According to Henry Luce, the creator of Time magazine, “Functional Curiosity grows as the number of educated peoples grows.” Macdonald argues that being “functionally curious” is not functional because it does not help the individual function.
John, a missionary, for the first time she is the little girl lost in the woods. St. John is very passionate about his work as a missionary in India, which is what he is home prepping for. Once the reader gets to know St. John he is a hard and cold man, who focuses on one thing and that is marrying a beautiful woman and taking her with him to be his missionary wife. This makes the reader and Jane ignore the fact that he is handsome, blonde, and blue-eyed. Now to focus on that Jane came into St. John’s life poor, starving and alone.
In the article “Reading and Thought” by Dwight MacDonald he advocates how printed readings such as the Time Magazine is “not functional” and irrelevant to an individual. According to his statements readers skim or only read parts of the Time Magazine due to the fact that most readings are long. Although Macdonald is partially right about this claim, some online articles, magazines, and newspapers are still practical and contain useful information on various topics. Macdonald only emphasis printed readings like Times and New York Times however he doesn’t mention other companies that people also read. Not all printed readings are unnecessary but instead contain relevant information to readers like topics based on health, natural disasters, politics, and nature.

This is known as intergenerational mobility. When preparing the diagram pictured on page 206 only the white men were questioned. The father’s education level, father’s occupation, son’s education and occupation are the four key variables (Kimmel & Aronson, 2012, pg. 206). According to Kimmel and Aronson, 2012, while studying Blau and Duncan’s research they found that the sons’ education and occupation is dependent upon the ascriptive and achieved characteristics.

In the play of Macbeth, there are some characters that could be responsible for Duncan’s death. I personally think Lady Macbeth is the cause of Duncan's murder. She is the most ambitious to kill the king in the beginning of the play, pressuring Macbeth. Lady Macbeth was persuasive of driving Macbeth to commit the murder. She manipulates him to go through with the murder even though he was very doubtful about it.
It portrays the 1917 Russian Revolution atmosphere with the replacement of Russia into Animal Farm. The characters also did not fail to resemble the real people involved in the revolution. Power leads to greed, used to take advantage and manipulate. A person with absolute power tends to choose greediness after a certain time period, despite having followed a wise person’s vision and mission.
