After I graduate from high school, I know almost exactly what I want to do with my life. However, John Tyree has no clue. John decides to drop out of high school and enlist in the army, not knowing what he wants out of life—until he falls in love with a girl named Savannah. At the pinnacle of infatuation, John has to return to war. After writing letters and being away for a long while, he’s almost ready to come home. However, 9/11 occurs and the strength of their love is tested when John decides to reenlist. The unexpected time spent apart will change the course of their futures forever. In this journal, I will be evaluating, questioning, and predicting.
I am evaluating the characterization of Savannah. She is extremely generous toward others, kind to everyone she meets, and passionate about helping people. ☺ Savannah spent her spring break rebuilding houses for a family that lost theirs, which proves that she has a good heart. The love presented throughout this book is a flame that will never burn out. ☺ It’s the kind of love that lasts forever: “And when her lips met mine, I knew that I could live to be a hundred and visit every country in the world, but nothing would ever compare to that single moment when I first kissed the girl of my dreams and knew that my love would last forever” (Sparks 74). Part of my prediction includes that Tim dies of cancer. I don’t believe that Savannah would leave Tim for John, but if there was a chance she could be with John again without hurting Tim, she would. The kind of love that they share never dies, and I think they are meant to be together—and maybe Tim getting cancer with the probablility of dying is a sign.
